College students are often so focused on what they need to get done that they forget what their body needs. And spending time in nature can be difficult when you are hunched over a computer all day.
Why is being in nature important for students?
Stress relief: Being in nature for short periods of time can lower cortisol levels which is a stress hormone.
Improved mood: Time in nature can also improve mood and decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety – by providing a feeling of peace and tranquility.
Improved attention and focus: Moving your body and being in nature can have a calming effect and lead to increased attention and focus. One study found that students who spent time in nature before an exam performed better than those who did not.
Increased creativity: The sights, sounds, and feelings that are experienced in nature can all stimulate the mind and increase creativity by allowing the mind to wander and explore new ideas.
Better physical health: Spending time in nature means you are getting your body moving. Sunlight also improves Vitamin D levels which is good for bone health.
Improved memory: It is believed that walking in nature improves memory by reducing stress and clearing the mind for higher level thinking and remembering.
