Welcome to the world of occupation!
When I start working with students we have to talk about what occupations are.
Do you know what an occupation is?
Occupations can be any activity that you do to meet your needs, wants, and/or desires. Occupations can include sleep, school, work, bathing, dressing, and even hanging out with your friends.
The occupations that make up your days are important because they give your life purpose. The way that you do occupations also holds the key to your life happiness, success, and health.
Ever heard the saying “you are what you eat”? Well, research shows that “you are what you do”!
The things that you “do” on a daily basis can make you happier, more successful, and healthier.
And when you do things with others, it makes your life even more fulfilling. Social occupations in particular can protect us against certain diseases and disability.
When you are going through a life transition (like attending college), the things you do change. On a daily basis, the occupations you do may not have an immediate purpose (going to some classes can be boring!) but overall, your daily occupations should be helping you get somewhere in life.
Working towards a purposeful and meaningful life takes some work.
First, you need to figure out what is important to you.
Then you have to figure out whether what you are “doing” matches with those important things in your life.
